About the GSDCA Haemophilia Scheme
About the Hereditary Diseases Scheme
Haemophilia is
a blood disorder that reduces the blood clotting factor thereby causing
abnormal bleeding.
The GSDCA conducts a Haemophilia Scheme in order to ensure that Haemophilia does not manifest itself in the
breed in Australia. Haemophilia is a genetic disease passed from
mother to son. The disease manifests itself in that sons can become
haemophiliacs and the disease is carried genetically via daughters to the
next generation of sons.
At the 2008 GSDCA AGM,
a motion was carried to replace the individual State Club Haemophilia
Registrars with one National Haemophilia Registrar for the GSDCA Haemophilia
Scheme. As from 1st July 2008, the National Haemophilia Registrar has the
sole responsibility for the issuing of the all GSDCA testing sheets and all
GSDCA Hneg certificates.
This Australia wide
scheme applies to imported male dogs and sons of imported females only ! In
order for any GSD to be accepted as a stud dog and his progeny be registered
by any Australian National Kennel Council (ANKC) affiliated Kennel Control,
the owners must supply :
proof of the dog
having been x-rayed for Hip Dysplasia and Elbow Dysplasia, and
the dog must have been
tested for Haemophilia, with the owner in possession of an H neg
Certificate for that dog.
Requirements:
-
All males from any other country
imported into Australia must be in possession of an H.Neg certificate
tested in Australia prior to ANY progeny being registered in Australia.
-
All sons of bitches from any other
country imported into Australia must be in possession of an H.Neg
certificate prior to ANY progeny being registered in Australia.
-
All sons of bitches from any other
country imported in whelp into Australia must be in possession of an H.Neg
certificate prior to ANY progeny being registered in Australia.
-
All sons of bitches where the bitch was impregnated with frozen or chilled
semen from any male not in possession of an H.Neg certificate prior to ANY

Haemophilia Application Form
The GSDCA
has set up a Hereditary Diseases Subcommittee to monitor, investigate and recommend
remedial action on emerging disorders that may affect breed development.
Through these initiatives, the GSDCA and its affiliate members have built up
much knowledge and resources on the veterinary aspects of many
disorders/conditions which may affect the German Shepherd Dog.
Over the years, many articles have been published
by the GSDCA in its National Review Magazine to inform GSD enthusiasts of topical
veterinary and health matters.
To report disorders, conditions
and health matters observed or diagnosed in German Shepherd Dogs or Puppies
to the Hereditary Diseases Scheme,
please forward information to the GSDCA so it may gather all available data
to better understand what may be occurring and affecting breed development.
